Album Review: Invisible People | Chicano Batman

This is Album #33/20 that I listened to for my 2020 challenge. I listened to this album 8 times for my review.

Here are some quick stats about Invisible People by Chicano Batman:

  • Album #4

  • Released May 1, 2020 (Previous album release 2017)

  • Album length: 39:29, 12 tracks

  • Doesn't appear to have charted on the US Billboard 200 chart

  • Genre: Funk, Psychedelic Soul, Indie

  • Metacritic Score: 68/100

I decided to listen to this album because I wanted to listen to something that's a little lesser known. I had heard of Chicano Batman before and have heard some of their songs before, but didn't have much experience with them going into this album listen.

I thought the album was a little boring. I definitely dreaded having to listen to it because it sounded very generic Indie Rock to me. My favorite songs were "Color My Life" and "Polymetronomic Harmony" but I didn't really like those that much more than the rest. The whole album was kind of static and all sounded the same to me. There isn't much variation between songs in terms of tempo, vibe or style. I think it was just not very memorable. I didn't hate it, it just was very bland for me. I did like the chill vibe, but I would get bored when listening to forty minutes of that sound.

Recommendations:

Listen or don't listen? Don't listen. I wouldn't recommend listening to this album. There aren't any highs or lows that make you remember the journey. To me, there's nothing special about this album that distinguishes it from many other Indie Rock albums that have come out over the past ten years. The album is very average in my opinion.

This album didn't really inspire me to listen to their previous (or future) music, but it also didn't completely discourage me from it. I don't think I'll ever go out of my way to listen to this album in full again, but I may listen to scattered songs that come on during shuffle. I'd give this album a 5/10. It was just right in the middle for me. Have you listened to this album? Please let me know your thoughts down below.
