Album Review: I Used to Know Her by H.E.R.

As part of my research into the 2019 Grammy's Album of the Year category, I listened to each nominated album 5 times in order to evaluate my own ranking.

Here are some quick stats about I Used to Know Her by H.E.R.:

  • Album #2

  • Released August 30, 2019 (previous album release in 2017)

  • Album length: 72:09, 19 tracks

  • Peaked at #86 on US Billboard 200 (2 weeks on chart)

  • Genre: R&B

  • No Metacritic score

This isn't my normal genre that I usually listen to, but I still enjoyed listening to this. It took me a few listens to get into it, but it definitely grew on me, which was especially surprising since I'm not usually interested in this type of music.

I feel like there's a really powerful message here. And the passion and energy is so overwhelming. There were some rap elements the some of the songs. I liked that they weren't the typical mumble rap we get these days. And these songs have a really meaningful message. I think she is a very talented singer and her voice would really soothe and relax me. I think the run time was a little long that I would start to get a little bored though.

It looks like she is credited as a writer on at least most of the songs. But most of these are collaborations with 3-5 writers. When there are that many writers in the room, I feel like the main artist's input must be pretty small at that point. This is pretty disappointing, because from the passion in the performance I really thought she was speaking her words. This is especially important for me to see in the rap genre. It also doesn't look like she produced any of the songs or played any of the instruments in the recording.

Here are some songs that I particularly liked: "Take You There," "Uninvited" and "Lord is Coming." There weren't any songs that I didn't like.

Overall, I was very surprised with how much I like this one. I like what she's doing. I think she's doing something a little bit different and I think she's really talented. I don't know if I will continue to listen to this album though. I may occasionally come back to listen to my favorites.
