Album Review: good to know | Jojo

This is Album #35/20 that I listened to for my 2020 challenge. I listened to this album 8 times for my review.

Here are some quick stats about good to know by Jojo:

  • Album #4

  • Released May 1, 2020 (Previous album release 2016)

  • Album length: 35:17, 11 tracks

  • Peaked t #33 on the US Billboard 200 (On the chart for 1 week so far)

  • Genre: R&B

  • No Metacritic score

This has been one of my hyped albums of the year. I've really been looking forward to listening to Jojo's comeback. I'm not too familiar with her first two albums (other than a few of the very popular singles), but I'm pretty familiar with her third album. I've always just really liked her as a person and I've always loved her powerful voice.

I really liked this album! The first couple of listens I wasn't so sure. I thought a lot of the songs sounded similar, but with more listens I started to appreciate subtle differences between songs. I think what makes this album so special is Jojo's amazing vocals. They are absolutely insane. Her riffs and skill are such a pleasure to listen to. The songs are so catchy and they're really fun to sing along with. There are a few slower songs on the album, but other than that I wouldn't really say there's much variety on the album. So I can understand how people may think that a lot of the songs sound similar (I even thought the same thing in the beginning), especially for people who aren't as familiar with or appreciative of the R&B genre.

My favorite songs on the album were "So Bad," "Man," and "Proud (Outro)." There were a few songs that I didn't really like. Some of the songs got a little too raunchy and explicit for my taste, namely "Comeback." Many of the songs on the album contain discussion of explicit language/material which isn't my favorite, but I could overlook the lyrics on most songs because of the vocals and music.

Recommendations:

Listen or don't listen? Listen. This is a very strong R&B album. Jojo's vocals are so powerful and confident and I'm just completely captivated listening to the album.

Buy or don't buy? Buy. Most of these songs are great. Jojo is such a star and I think she's so underrated.

I'll continue to listen to this album in full in the future. I'll definitely be looking out for her future albums. When I get the chance I'd also love to listen to her first two albums in full. I'd give this album a 7/10. Have you listened to this album? I'd love to hear your thoughts down below.
