Movie Review: Hamilton

This was movie #11/20 (#25 overall) that I watched for my 20 for 2020 challenge. This was released on Disney+ on July 3, 2020. I have seen Hamilton on stage before so in a sense this is kind of a rewatch. But this is the first time I watched the professionally shot version on Disney+ so I will be counting this towards my 2020 challenge.

This show is a masterpiece and I'm so glad that everyone now has the opportunity to watch it. I'm glad it was such a hit on Disney+. The world needs more pro-shot musicals and movie musicals so I hope that this starts a trend to start making more of those.

The show can be a little long so I did have to break it up into a few different segments to watch it. It can be long, but it's not unusual for a musical to be this length. And I think that every moment in this musical needs to be included, and I see the purpose in keeping all of it. I was obsessed with Hamilton again for weeks after watching this. I wanted to watch it again immediately. I feel like there’s so much meaning put into every single word choice. The show is full of double meaning, there’s multiple interpretations behind everything, there’s so many subtle jokes to pick up on. There’s so much material to analyze, and there’s so much re-watch potential. And it goes without saying that the music is so good.

I’m glad that we’ll always have a recording of this original, iconic cast. There were a few minor flubs in this recording, but 99.9% of it was perfect. I’m appreciative that they kept those errors in because that 0.1% of errors just shows that they did have a limited number of takes and that the cast was still overwhelmingly perfect. Those small errors makes it feel so much more like a live show, which is such a blessing to have these days when we have no live theater.

I love this musical so much and I am so grateful that we are forever able to watch the iconic, original cast perform these roles. I’d give this a 10/10. Have you watched this pro-shot? Let me know your thoughts down below.
