In this post I will be reviewing and talking about the four main Disney+ original shows: The Mandalorian, Encore!, The World According to Jeff Goldblum and High School Musical: The Musical: The Series. In a future post I will talk about the first two Disney+ original movies: Lady and the Tramp and Noelle. At the end of the first week of Disney+ I will also be posting a week 1 recap which will include discussions of the other shows and shorts as well. I'll get into the reviews in no particular order. And there will be no spoilers!
THE WORLD ACCORDING TO JEFF GOLDBLUM, EPISODE 1
I'll just go right out and say it. It was a little boring in my opinion. The first episode was about sneakers. I was thinking that the topics of the show would be more like "Jeff Goldblum tries to ice skate" or "Jeff Goldblum is a farmer for a day." I thought it would be more like the YouTube videos where celebrities try something. I didn't think it would be about Jeff Goldblum explaining the history of an everyday product. Again, maybe that's my bad for not doing my research and for making assumptions. I think Jeff Goldblum is a really entertaining guy, but there's only so much he can do with a boring topic. Hopefully I will like future episodes better if they have a topic I find more interesting. I will continue watching this show until more original content is added, but I definitely will be kinda forcing myself to watch it. Once more original content is added, I probably will drop this show. Sorry, Jeff!
HIGH SCHOOL MUSICAL: THE MUSICAL: THE SERIES, EPISODE 1
I thought it was pretty cute and enjoyable. I'm glad to be back in the High School Musical universe again, even though it's in this meta way of being back in the universe. About a week before this episode came out, I saw a performance on Good Morning America with all of the cast and I was pleasantly surprised that all of the kids could sing and dance! Sorry Hollywood, but I don't know what's been up with your casting decisions in the past ten years. People are always cast who don't have the right singing, dancing or acting abilities that are required for the part just because they're attractive or they have more followers or something. But when I saw the GMA performance I was really happy to see that the kids were really good! It's good to see the show utilize these really talented kids and to hear their beautiful voices without autotune. I just really have to applaud them for these casting choices! There were also one or two original songs in the first episode and I thought they were pretty good! I'm definitely interested in continuing to watch the show. One thing that I am disappointed in though is that the first episode is only 38 minutes long. I expected this to be more around an hour in length.
ENCORE!, EPISODE 1
This episode was the Annie episode. I thought this was also really cute! I think it's an original, interesting concept. It was really cool to see them bring high school friends back together again and see how they interact. It's interesting to hear them talk about what they're up to these days and to hear them talk about the secrets they were hiding back in high school and what they were going through that no one else knew about. I liked the story lines in this episode based around the "Annie" and "Daddy Warbucks" characters. The old drama teacher was also hilarious: "Soap, no bubbles I think!" I thought it was really cute when she asked the professional dancers for help and they were so patient with her and went out and helped her. I really appreciated that they had a professional band, and professional backup dancers/singers/actors to help fill out the cast a little bit and help them have the best possible performance. I am definitely interested in continuing on with this show. My interest may wane depending on the musical and depending on what other original content will be available to watch in the future. I'm not usually interested in these type of reality shows. But also as an avid musical theater geek, it's kind of my duty to support any mainstream musical theater content.
THE MANDALORIAN, EPISODE 1
I'm not too much of a Star Wars fan. Yes, I said it. But I think this show can be entertaining to someone who doesn't like Star Wars. My biggest problem with the show so far is that it was only 37 minutes long! Again I was expecting something around the 55 minute mark. Especially for Disney+'s most hyped show! There were a lot of cute animals/creatures which always makes me happy. Also the bounty hunter droid bit was pretty funny. I don't really have much to say about it other than I enjoyed it and I'll definitely be continuing with this show.
There ya go! There's my thoughts on the first episodes of the first four main shows. Which Disney+ original show is your favorite so far? Let me know your thoughts down below!
