Book Review: Lucky Boy | Shanthi Sekaran

This was Book #5 that I have read this year. Since it was published in 2017, I won't be counting it towards my 20 for 2020 challenge. My review will be pretty brief, but I will have a little spoiler discussion at the bottom.

I thought this book was okay. A big reason why I didn’t love it could be that I read this to participate in my book club. This isn’t a book that I would typically pick up on my own. And I also just might not have been in the right headspace at the time of picking it up.

I’m not really sure why the book didn’t really click with me. I found Kavya and Rishi to be slightly annoying, and despite all the hardships Soli goes through I felt mostly indifferent towards her as well. I also felt like the story was pretty long and slow.

I mostly just felt very indifferent towards the whole book. I don’t regret that I read this book, I’m just disappointed I didn’t love it as much as most other people seemed to.

***SPOILER SECTION***

I did want Soli to end up with Ignacio in the end, but I don’t really agree with how it all came together. I don’t like that Soli had to kidnap Ignacio to be with him again. Kavya and Rishi get no closure that way, and it just isn’t the best look for Soli. But mostly what I disliked with the end was how Kavya and Rishi were treated. Yes Rishi went way too far by going to Mexico to chase after Soli, but Kavya and Rishi should not feel guilty for helping Ignacio??? I thought that was so ridiculous to say that they should feel guilty and that they realized that they were in the wrong the whole time. Yes they were wrong in the way they automatically criticized and criminalized Soli in their heads just because she was detained (this doesn’t mean she was a bad parent like Kavya was thinking), but they shouldn’t feel guilty for keeping Soli away from Ignacio. That was none of their doing. And the story goes on to say that Ignacio forgot all about them and lived happily ever after. I don’t like that the story just erases all that Kavya and Rishi did for Iggy. So I just really had a problem with that, but mostly I was just indifferent towards the whole book.

***END OF SPOILER SECTION***

I'd give this book a 3/5. Have any of you read this book? I'd love to hear your thoughts down below.
